Kickstarter: Lindsey Luff

NoiseTrade has done it again with free music by Lindsey Luff, an underrated fresh-faced singer-songwriter residing in Brooklyn by way of Memphis, TN, whose earnest easy-on-the-ears voice exudes a youthful vulnerability bursting with raw older-than-her-years emotion.  Her melodic interpretations are understated, yet brim with a hopeful electricity.  I hope to hear more from her, as I can already imagine her growth as a musician unfolding before my eyes.  If you're interested in supporting her music, Luff is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund a full-length debut album with an end-of-April deadline, so donate if you're so inclined!

Lily & Madeleine: Come to Me

Lily & Madeleine, an ebullient folk-rock duo comprised of teenage Indianapolis-bred sisters who delight with their undulating-yet-profound melodies and distinct singer-songwriter sensibilities, is my new favorite music "find" on NoiseTrade.  A gentler-sounding version of the equally talented Swedish duo, First Aid Kit, Lily & Madeleine smooth over raw melodic edges with their steadfast complementary vocals, which differs from First Aid Kit, who embrace raw melodies via an understated bluesy-folk style of melancholy-meets-upbeat vocal renderings. 

There are so many obvious similarities between the two bands: young women who are sisters, the folk influence, moody, ambient-rooted melodies.  However, the one thing that is is glaringly, and in my opinion, ultimately American about the promotion of Lily & Madeleine's music is the sustained focus on their nostalgic girl-next-door looks--in contrast to this, the above video, a live acoustic version of "Come to Me," was chosen because the camera does not partake in these voyeuristic zoom-in sequences.  

Lily & Madeleine's forthcoming LP, Fumes, is slated for release today on Asthmatic Kitty Records.

Happy July 4th!

Native Son

I am really enjoying NOISETRADE--first Rachael Yamagata's acoustic mix tape (a precursor to her new EP, "Heavyweight," both of which I blogged about here) and now Kate Earl's musical sampler from her upcoming album, "Stronger."  How lucky can a girl be?  Below is by far my favorite song, "Native Son," from Kate Earl's new NOISETRADE sampler, which nostalgically reminds me of the sound of her first album, "Fate is the Hunter": folksy, quietly lyrical, and wildly, magically, influenced by her Alaskan upbringing.  It's been nearly a decade since "Fate," and Kate's voice has developed a soothing, melancholy depth; a haunting revelation of the soul, indeed.

Please bear with the video's simplicity--I think it adds to the mood of the song.  I created the video myself from the MP3 of "Native Son" and the album cover (I believe) of the soon-to-be-released "Stronger."  The song title was added onto the image by me.
